The start of the grape harvest in Rioja is late, around
the beginning of October, and the first area to begin picking is the
Rioja Baja.
The harvest usually takes thirty to forty days, which means that in some
places it continues well into the month of November.
To remove the bunches of grapes from the vines the grape-pickers use
"corquetes", small curved knives. The fruit is put into wicker
baskets (with a capacity of 15 to 20 kilos) and in wooden "comportas"
(80 to 120 kilos). These containers are then tipped into trailers for
transport by tractor to the bodega.
Once the grapes reach the bodega, different processes are followed to
obtain red, white or rose wines. |
